World War One Battles

What battle do you think is the most important of the war? Why?

  1. The battle of Somme was the most important battle of the war. Firstly, because of the large amounts of deaths of about 450,000 British troops and 500,000 German troops. Secondly, is because this battle was one of the largest battles fought in WW1. Lastly, since it was the main allied assault in 1916.

  2. The Somme battle is one of the great slaughterhouse battles, which caused a massive loss in the british army as well as the german's.
There was enormous loss of life for little territorial gain further, there were several important consequences on the war and home fronts mainly because of loss of great numbers of men from the same communities. The german attack on verdun, however, forced the allied commanders to change their plans, and the battle became a primarily british offensive. By the end of the battle verdun had been relieved; the main german forces had been held on the western front; and the enemy's strength had been very considerably worn down.Conversely if the central powers had won the battle they would've been able to attack the british forces, killing almost all of them and gaining their land consequently the allies will be defeated.

  3. The Battle of Verdun was the most significant for this war, as it showed that Germany was not all-powerful, and that France was a strong power itself. The battle gave new hope and determination to the French, as well as the Allies which leads them to win the war.

  4. Battle of marne was the most important. Germany was stopped by Britain and France, thus destroying the schlieffen plan. By the end if this battle germany postioned themselves and started fighting from trenches. This changed the movement of the war and was replaced by trench warfare which made the war much harder. After this battle europeans knew that the war wont end any soon, it will be long and deadly. The battle of marne was the real beginning of ww1.

  5. The battle of the Marne, or the first battle of WW1, was the most significant battle of the war for many reasons. This battle was supposedly the one where Germany would play out the Schleiffen Plan, defeat France on the West and then rush to Russia on the East. The plan though, did not play out as smoothly as the Germans had thought it would because the Allies stood in their way and blocked them from taking over Paris. This major event was what made the Battle of the Marne the most important in my opinion, because it not only showed that the Allies were there for France, but it also caused the Trench Warfare, or the stalemate, which stays for four more years.

  6. The Battle of the Somme was mainly important for the fact that it led to the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of people over the course of a few months. The battle caused the deaths of an estimated 300,000 soldiers on both sides. Outside of this, it had little clear impact on the way the war was fought or its outcome.

The Battle of the Somme was a horrible miscalculation. The British command felt that a huge artillery barrage would render the Germans unable to defend themselves. They were wrong, and the Germans were able to kill huge numbers of British.

  7. The Battle of Marne was the most important battle of ww1. It occured when Germany had overrun Belgium and was pushing through France threatening Paris. British and French forces had taken heavy casualities trying to stop Germans. Then the German army was forced to abandon the Schlieffen plan and retreat. This caused the Allies to respond. Leading to the bloody Trench Warfare.

  11. I think that the Battle of Marne was the most important battle in the world war. It was the first battle of WW1 and it started the trench warfare which caused the stalemate at the Western front line. The French joined forces with the British troops and fought the Germans who planned on capturing Paris. Their plan was stopped when there was a gap created between the German lines, the Allies advanced into the gap and split the German army. The Germans were eventually forced to retreat and reconsider. They underestimated the Allies and thought the capture on Paris would be a swift victory. Both sides suffered huge losses and the war went on.

  14. I think the battle of Marne, since it was the first war. Also the battle was important to the war because it stopped German expansion throughout Europe and also proved a quick German victory was impossible, which failed the German's war plan. This battle led to many battles that was fought in World War 1 also the fact it was the start of Trench Warfare

  15. The battle of Verdun is the most important battle of the war. This battle showed the reality and brutality of war and also showed how cruel the German intentions were, “to solely bleed France white.”
The German commander underestimated the French forces and thought of them as an easy target but the French surprised them by showing them that they are not an easy opponent. The French put up a fight and the causalities for the German were as enormous as of the French’s.
Though the Germans still managed to seized the most powerful fort. A sign of this battle’s significance is the need to start another battle, The Battle of the Somme, to drag the Germans out of Verdun.

  17. I think that The Battle of the Somme and The Battle of Marne were the two most important wars. The Battle of the Somme played a significant role from the huge amount of lives that were taken away for the sake of territorial gain, and The Battle of Marne was the battle that ended the Schlieffen Plan. Comparing the both battles, I personally think The Battle of Marne was the most important war.

  18. I think the Battle of Marne is the most important because it prevented the Schlieffen Plan from being executed. It also led to the Trench Warfare which led to the use of new technology and weapons such as machine guns and tanks.

  19. the battle of verdun is the most important because It was the longest battle fought during the entire war and in some ways the most expensive. The German commander wanted to "bleed France white" and launched a massive battle that included tanks, aircraft.. as it showed that Germany was not all-powerful,and France is strong.

  20. The first Battle of the Marne was an important battle as it marked that start of the downfall of Germany with their failed Schleiffen Plan.It led to the initialisation of the trench warfare on the western front which lasted 3 years in deadlock.

  21. In my opinion, I think the battle of verdun is the most important battle. It was the longest battle in world war won. Also the Germans planned to attack the French, although they're conclusion went wrong. It showed them that they aren't the only strongest country and it gave hope to the French and all the other allies.

  22. The battle of Marne was the most important battle of the war, the first battle. The Germans thought the Schleiffen plan was going to be a successful plan where they will attack the French with the help of Great Britain in western front and attack the Russians in the eastern front which turns out to be a fail. The battle was very long and it led to the trench warfare.
